whole numbers -post 1
GOOD MORNING BOYS 😊😊
Welcome back !!
Today we are going to start a new topic- WHOLE NUMBERS
Today, by the end of the lesson you will be able to:
➤ define "Whole numbers"
➤ explain the use of whole numbers.
➤ demonstrate the understanding of whole numbers on a number line.
What are Whole numbers?
Whole numbers are positive numbers, including zero, without any decimal or fractional parts. These numbers represent whole things without pieces.
For Example: 0, 7, 212 and 1023 are all whole numbers
(But numbers like ½, 1.1 and 3.5 are not whole numbers.)
Now, question arises... Why do we need Whole numbers when we have counting numbers or Natural numbers?
We can understand this by watching this video or by clicking on the link
Important points to remember:
➤ There is no largest whole number.
➤ Except 0, every whole number has an immediate predecessor or a number that comes before.
➤ A decimal number or a fraction lies between two whole numbers, but are not whole numbers.
Whole numbers on a number line
Let’s understand first, what is a number line?
A pictorial representation of numbers evenly marked on a straight line is known as a number line.
- To mark whole numbers on a number line draw a horizontal line and mark a point on it as 0.
- Extend this line towards right direction.
- Starting from 0, mark points 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9….on a line at equal distance towards right side.

- There is no whole number on the left of zero. Therefore zero is the smallest whole number.
- A whole number is greater than all the whole numbers which lie to the left of it on the number line.
- A whole number is less than all the whole numbers which lie to the right of it on the number line
- The number line also helps us to compare two whole numbers. i.e., to decide which of the two given whole numbers is greater or smaller.
- Therefore we can say that 5 is less than 9 and write 5 < We can also say that 5 is greater than 4 and write 5 > 4.

Now, I have one more video for you that explains the representation of Whole numbers on a Number Line: Watch this 👇 video
Let's start Ex-2.1 (page no.31) ( in your Maths Notebook)
Q1: Write the next three natural numbers after 10999.
Solution:[Hint: Next natural number can be calculated by adding 1 to the given number.]
Therefore, 10999 + 1 = 11000
11000 + 1 = 11001
11001 + 1 = 11002.
Hence, the next three natural numbers after 10999 are 11000, 11001 and 11002.
Q2: Write the three Whole numbers occurring just before 10001.
Solution:[Hint: Previous whole number can be calculated by subtracting 1 from the given number.]
Therefore, 10001 - 1 = 10000
10000 - 1 = 9999
9999 - 1 = 9998
Hence, the three whole numbers occurring just before 10001 are 10000, 9999 and 9998.
Q3: Which is the smallest whole number?
Solution: We know that the number which has no predecessor i.e ZERO is the smallest whole number.
Q4: How many Whole numbers are there between 32 and 53?
Solution: As, 53 - 32 = 21 - 1 = 20 (because to find the numbers in between the two numbers, we don't include the first and the last number).
Therefore, there are 20 Whole numbers between 32 and 53.
HOMEWORK
Do Q5 & Q6 on your own in your Maths Notebook.
Q5: [Hint: To find the successor, we add 1 to the given number]
Q6: [Hint: To find the predecessor, we subtract 1 from the given number]
That's all for today
Take Care 😊
God Bless!!
